The 'cargo' of the modern world wasn't a matter of who was smarter or more ambitious, but a matter of who happened to be standing in the right place at the right time.

The European conquest was not a result of superior intelligence or ambition, but rather a matter of geographic luck. Eurasia’s east-west axis allowed for the rapid spread of crops, animals, and innovations like steel and writing. This environmental advantage provided the Spanish with advanced technology, such as guns and armor, and horses for cavalry. Additionally, Eurasians had developed immunity to lethal diseases like smallpox through centuries of living in close proximity to domesticated livestock, while Native Americans had no such defenses.

The east-west orientation of Eurasia meant that large regions shared similar latitudes, day lengths, and seasonal climates. This allowed agricultural innovations, such as the domestication of wheat or peas, to spread easily across the continent because the plants could thrive in similar environments. In contrast, the north-south orientation of the Americas and Africa created massive climatic barriers, such as tropical jungles and deserts, which prevented the spread of crops, livestock, and ideas like the wheel or writing systems between different regions.

Domesticating an animal requires it to meet several specific criteria known as the Anna Karenina principle: it must grow quickly, breed in captivity, have a mild temperament, remain calm in enclosures, and follow a social hierarchy that humans can lead. While Eurasia was home to 13 of the 14 large herbivorous mammals suitable for domestication, other regions were less fortunate. For example, although zebras look like horses, they are notoriously mean-spirited and impossible to tame, leaving African societies without the same agricultural and transport advantages.

Food production is the foundation of social complexity because it allows for population growth and the creation of food surpluses. When a society can grow more calories than it needs for immediate survival, it can support "specialists" who do not have to farm, such as inventors, soldiers, bureaucrats, and kings. These specialists are the ones who develop complex writing systems, advanced metallurgy, and centralized governments. Societies that remained hunter-gatherers were limited by the daily search for food, which prevented the density and specialization required to build empires.

The script argues that modern inequality is a reflection of environmental history rather than human potential. The "hand of history" from thousands of years ago still influences the world today; nations with a long history of agriculture and writing had a massive head start in building stable institutions and wealth. If the populations of Australia and Eurasia had been swapped 13,000 years ago, the geographic advantages of Eurasia—such as its "jackpot" of wild grasses and domesticable animals—would likely have led the original Australians to become the dominant global power.
