The practice involves four steps: first, noticing and acknowledging the craving without fighting it; second, observing the physical sensations (like heat or tension) as a scientist would; third, using deep, mindful breathing to stay grounded as the urge peaks; and fourth, visualizing the wave of desire rising and then inevitably subsiding. This method builds nervous system capacity and self-efficacy by teaching the individual to remain present under pressure.

    The DEADS kit is a rapid-response toolbox designed for moments when willpower is low. "D" stands for Delay, which involves waiting out the peak of a craving (often using a timer). "E" is for Escape, meaning changing your physical environment to disrupt habit cues. "A" represents Avoid (staying away from known triggers) and Accept (acknowledging a trigger without acting on it). "D" is for Distract, engaging the brain in a focused task like a hobby or exercise. Finally, "S" stands for Substitute, which means meeting the underlying emotional need—such as loneliness or stress—with a healthy action like social interaction or a cold shower.

    A "Values Spine" is a concept from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) that involves defining who you want to be to provide stability during temptation. Instead of focusing solely on "not doing a bad thing," a person builds a spine by identifying their core identity as a leader, partner, or person of integrity. This shift from "I can't do this" to "I am the kind of person who chooses something better" creates sovereignty. It allows an individual to stand in their own truth and ensures they are fit to lead others because they have first mastered their own internal desires.
