While the original apostles like Peter and James lived and walked with Jesus, learning his ethical "Gospel of the Kingdom," Paul developed an abstract theological system centered on the death and resurrection. Critics, including historical figures like Thomas Jefferson and Jeremy Bentham, argue that Paul stripped away the localized, Jewish ethical requirements of Jesus to make the faith "portable" and compatible with the Roman Empire. By spiritualizing the "Kingdom of God" and instructing followers to be subject to governing authorities, Paul created an institutional framework that was less disruptive to imperial power than Jesus’ radical teachings. This led to accusations that Paul replaced the historical "Jesus of Nazareth" with a "Christ-myth" of his own making, prioritizing his private revelations over the eyewitness testimony of those who actually knew Jesus.
