In Type 1 the keys are gone, and in Type 2 the locks are broken. Whether it’s Type 1 or Type 2, it’s really about staying in that 'Goldilocks zone'—not too high, not too low.
The main difference lies in how the body handles insulin. In Type 1 diabetes, the body's immune system attacks the cells that produce insulin, meaning the body makes little to none at all. In Type 2 diabetes, the body still produces insulin, but it either doesn't make enough or the body's cells don't respond to it correctly. Both types result in blood sugar levels becoming too high, but they require different management strategies.
Insulin acts like a key that unlocks your body's cells to let sugar, or glucose, inside to be used for energy. When you eat, your blood sugar rises, and the pancreas releases insulin to manage those levels. Without enough functional insulin, sugar stays trapped in your bloodstream instead of fueling your muscles and brain. This is why understanding insulin is a fundamental part of any diabetes lesson for teens.
Blood sugar, also known as glucose, is the primary source of energy for your body's cells and comes from the food you eat. For someone without diabetes, the body automatically keeps blood sugar in a healthy range. However, for those with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes, blood sugar can become too high or too low. Managing these levels through diet, exercise, or medication is essential to feeling good and staying healthy every day.
