Explore Cosmic Chronology and the evolution of the universe. Learn about Big Bang transitions, the origin of atoms, and how light finally broke free from the fog.

Every atom in your body, from the hydrogen in the water you drink to the carbon in your DNA, has a lookback time that stretches across billions of years. You are literally made of the history of the universe.
Everything

During the first few minutes of Cosmic Chronology, the universe was a crowded, hot, and blindingly bright environment. It is described as a brilliantly glowing fog of white and soft orange light, forming a thick soup of particles. In this state, every photon of light was trapped and bouncing around like a pinball, making the universe completely opaque rather than dark.
The universe became transparent after approximately three hundred and seventy thousand years of waiting. At this point in the cosmic timeline, the fog finally cleared, allowing light to break free from the particle soup. This transition enabled light to begin a journey across the void lasting billions of years, eventually reaching telescopes on Earth today as part of the evolution of the universe.
Big Bang transitions represent massive phases where the character of the universe changes because the particles inside it stop interacting in the same way. It is often compared to a giant chemistry set that constantly adjusts its own temperature dial. These transitions mark the shift from a trapped state of light to a transparent void, fundamentally altering the physical nature of space and matter.
Every atom in the human body, such as the hydrogen in water or the carbon in DNA, has a lookback time that stretches across billions of years. This means our personal history is directly linked to the origin of atoms and the early stages of the universe. By studying Cosmic Chronology, we can trace the timeline of our own physical components back to the very first moments of existence.
