Основная идея заключается в имитации: одна яркая музыкальная мысль, называемая темой, последовательно проходит через разные голоса. Со временем фуга превратилась из простого канона в вершину полифонии, где одна тема представляется в различных контрапунктических условиях.

Ответ — это вступление второго голоса, который обычно звучит на пять ступеней выше или на четыре ниже основной темы. Если ответ повторяет тему абсолютно точно, его называют реальным.
