Deciding Our Mutual Future

Most Americans and many Mexicans focus on Mexico's poverty, corruption, and violence. While these problems exist, they present an incomplete picture. Mexico is fundamentally transforming from authoritarianism to democracy, from a closed to open economy, and from a poor to middle-class nation. The middle class now outnumbers the poor, transparency has improved, and despite concentrated violence, Mexico is building the democratic rule of law needed for lasting security. The U.S.-Mexico relationship begins with people, exemplified by the marriage of Leticia Ramirez Carmona and Abraham Hernandez Mora on International Bridge Number One. The current immigration system is failing despite billions spent, tearing apart communities without stopping illegal entry. The U.S. needs a more efficient system recognizing family ties and labor market needs, streamlining family processes and creating flexible worker programs that match workplace demands with legal immigration flows. The Laredo-Nuevo Laredo border crossing exemplifies both NAFTA's success and infrastructure challenges. Despite trade doubling, border facilities remain outdated-the lone rail bridge dates to pre-Mexican Revolution days. The U.S. must shift from building walls to building bridges, focusing on North American rather than just U.S. competitiveness. Mexico needs help overcoming economic monopolies, limited credit access, weak infrastructure, and poor education. For over a century, U.S. southern strategy has focused on deflecting perceived perils from Mexico. But Mexico could become America's Spain-a once-developing nation transformed into a stable democracy and strong economy. This transformation would ease bilateral tensions, reduce northbound immigration, increase Mexican consumption of U.S. goods, and make border cities as safe as their American counterparts. This Spanish-style future depends on U.S. cooperation, as Mexico's economy remains tied to its northern neighbor through exports, investment, and remittances. The two countries must address mutual threats like organized crime together, making the most of their strengths while counteracting weaknesses. They will "rise and fall together, two nations indivisible."
