Marconi and his wife Beatrice were supposed to sail on the Titanic as guests of White Star Line, but Marconi departed earlier on the Lusitania, while Beatrice canceled when their son fell ill. As for Ethel Le Neve, she boarded the White Star Line's Majestic in Southampton on November 23, 1910, traveling under the false name "Miss Allen." After arriving in New York, she went to Toronto, adopted the name Ethel Nelson, and worked as a typist. Finding Canada alien, she returned to London in 1916 despite submarine-infested waters. There she met and married Stanley Smith, raising two children in East Croydon without ever revealing her past to him.
