Prudent amid passion, Lincoln was never doctrinaire. Having risen from poverty, he knew humanity's savage nature and understood most men are law-abiding only through routine and custom. He took the middle path between Abolitionists and Fire-eaters because he held that the Union's preservation transcended any fanatic scheme of perfectibility. To live within a just order is to live within a pattern that has beauty. The individual finds purpose and security within order, whether of soul or community. Without order, life becomes poor, nasty, brutish, and short. Though no perfect order exists, any tolerable order can be improved. The American order, despite recent deficiencies, has maintained remarkable freedom, opportunity, and prosperity. The conscientious citizen works to improve this order, recognizing that the alternative to tolerable order is not utopia but intolerable disorder.
