When I speak of "the tallest mountain on Earth," I'm using a description that identifies Mount Everest without requiring direct acquaintance with it. Even proper names function as disguised descriptions-"Aristotle" might mean for me "the teacher of Alexander the Great who wrote the Nicomachean Ethics."
This distinction explains how we can know about things beyond our direct experience. Physical objects like tables and chairs are known only by description-as "the causes of such-and-such sense-data"-rather than by acquaintance. Similarly, other minds are known only by description, as "the minds that have such-and-such experiences."
Russell's fundamental principle is that every proposition we can understand must consist entirely of constituents with which we're acquainted. This doesn't mean we can only know what we've directly experienced, but rather that our knowledge of things not directly experienced must be built from elements with which we are acquainted.
This theory elegantly explains how knowledge extends beyond private experience while maintaining that all knowledge ultimately reduces to acquaintance. It also clarifies why certain philosophical problems arise-attempts to describe what can only be known by acquaintance inevitably fall short, while failure to recognize the descriptive nature of much of our knowledge leads to confusion about what we can legitimately claim to know.

Even the most established scientific theories ultimately rest on the unprovable assumption that the future will resemble the past.
Russell concludes that we must accept the principle of induction based on its intrinsic evidence-its self-evident reasonableness-rather than through deductive proof. This doesn't mean we should doubt induction in practice. The principle works remarkably well in everyday life and science. Experience provides examples that help us grasp universal principles, but the principles themselves have a necessity that transcends particular instances. We don't need to check every possible pair of couples to know they'll always make four items.
Russell identifies an important limitation of a priori knowledge: it cannot prove that anything actually exists. We can know a priori that "if A exists, then B exists," but knowledge that A actually exists requires experience. This limits what philosophy can establish about reality through pure reasoning alone.
This analysis helps resolve the historic debate between empiricists and rationalists. The empiricists were right that knowledge of existence requires experience, while the rationalists were right that some knowledge has a necessity that experience alone cannot provide. This leads to Russell's crucial distinction: universals have being rather than existence. They subsist or have timeless being, rather than existing in the temporal world of particulars. The number 2 doesn't exist at a particular place and time, yet it has a kind of reality that allows us to make true statements about it.
