In that very poverty, they are kingdom-heirs, with treasure hidden in the cross. The disciples are also called "the light of the world" and "the salt of the earth"-not something they must become, but what they already are through Christ's call. As salt, they are the earth's highest good, preserving it through their presence. As light, their existence is necessarily visible-"a city set on a hill cannot be hid." Though Jesus has died and risen, the baptized can still live in his bodily presence through communion with him. Our communion with the glorified Lord is even richer than what the first disciples experienced. The Body of Christ is our ground of faith and the perfect gift through which we receive salvation. God has always sought fallen humanity, sending his Word that was rejected. Then the supreme miracle occurred: the Son of God became flesh, taking our human nature upon himself. God took humanity to himself bodily in Jesus, not merely choosing a perfect individual but taking up our entire human nature with all its infirmity and sinfulness. The Church is simultaneously one man (the Body of Christ) and many members in fellowship. Each member preserves their distinct identity and function, yet exists only as part of the whole. The Holy Spirit brings Christ to each member and builds up the Church by gathering individuals together, creating fellowship among the members. In Christ, we no longer live our own lives-he lives his life in us. We participate in both his suffering and glory. Though only Christ's suffering atones for sin, he grants believers the privilege of suffering "for him" as he suffered for us. This suffering benefits the Body of Christ, the Church, with members bearing suffering that others are spared. Christ's followers are destined to bear his image, becoming brethren of God's firstborn Son. This image penetrates their being, transforming them through daily communion until they increasingly resemble their Master. No follower can view Christ's image with detachment-it has transformative power when we surrender ourselves completely. At creation, God made Adam in his own image as creation's pinnacle. But the serpent convinced Adam he must achieve godlikeness through his own action rather than receiving it as grace. This was humanity's fall-Adam became "as God" in his own way, ruling a God-forsaken world in solitary divinity, yet no longer truly human. God's solution was not to give humanity better philosophy or religion, but to assume fallen man's image himself. The Son laid aside divine form to take a slave's form. In Jesus-his teaching, acts, life and death-God's image is revealed anew on earth. Yet this isn't Adam's paradisiacal image but one who enters sin and death's world, bears humanity's sorrows, endures God's judgment, and obeys unto death.

The disciple community has been torn from the world's clutches while still living within it. It forms one body with its own sovereignty-the holy Church, the community of saints whose members are called to be holy, sanctified in Christ. Like a sealed train traveling through foreign territory or Noah's ark pitched with pitch, the Church moves through the world protected yet separate. The Church must claim its distinct sphere within the world, functioning as the city on a hill. This gives the Church its "political" character-maintaining the boundary between Church and world while proclaiming God's lordship over all creation. Saints must walk worthy of their calling by daily recalling the gospel. Their breach with sin is complete-"Whosoever is begotten of God doeth no sin." Christians are no longer sinners under sin's dominion but saints called to be what they already are. Unlike the many "works of the flesh," there is one "fruit of the Spirit"-love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, meekness, self-control. This fruit grows miraculously without human willing. The saints remain unaware of their fruit; to become self-observers would sever them from the root. Personal sanctification consists in the Spirit's conflict with the flesh. Saints experience daily dying in the flesh while Christ lives in them through the Spirit. Though hidden from their eyes, the fruit is present. The community of saints constantly proclaims and receives forgiveness, walking worthily of the gospel by not casting grace away. Christians must do good works to be saved, as those caught doing evil works won't see God's kingdom. Yet these good works are ultimately God's own action in us. We were saved through God's work in Christ, not our own efforts. We can never boast of our works, for we are his workmanship. God has prepared these good works beforehand; our task is to walk in them while clinging to Christ alone.

Jesus concludes the Sermon on the Mount with a stark choice between two paths: building one's life on rock or sand. He doesn't allow his listeners to selectively interpret his teachings or pick what seems helpful. The only proper response to Jesus' words is simple obedience-not interpretation, not discussion, but doing. Those who hear Christ's word and do it build their house upon rock. When storms come, this foundation holds firm because it's built on actual obedience rather than mere intellectual agreement. The alternative is hearing without doing, which Jesus explicitly calls disobedience. Such a foundation cannot withstand life's hurricanes, and the house built on it will collapse in ruins. Jesus encourages his disciples with "Fear not" as he sends them out. Though their sufferings remain hidden now, they will eventually be revealed before God and all people. The gospel isn't meant to remain obscure but must be proclaimed publicly. The disciples must overcome their fear of men with fear of God, knowing that nothing happens without God's knowledge. The time for decision is short-those true to Christ on earth will find him standing by their side in judgment, while those ashamed of him will be denied. Christ's peace creates division, setting family members against each other in the name of God's kingdom. This exclusive claim on human devotion comes from the Savior himself, whose love means the cross and discipleship, but also resurrection: "He that loseth his life for my sake shall find it." The division Jesus creates penetrates even the confessing church itself. Not everyone saying "Lord, Lord" will enter heaven; the dividing line runs through the church itself. Making the confession gives no special claim upon Jesus, nor does church membership with right doctrine. God won't ask if we were good Protestants, but if we did his will.
