Today, Jackson walks daily along marble corridors where few African Americans have ever been, occupying a position that only 115 other Americans have ever held, none of them Black women. Her chambers are adorned with paintings by African American artists like Sam Gilliam and Alma Thomas-masterpieces procured from the Smithsonian and other museums, hanging inside this fabled institution for the first time in its history. Like the statement necklaces she layers over her judicial robe-pieces from across America and countries like South Africa and Brazil-the art in her chambers reminds her of the hope that change represents. For many, her seat represents the realization of America's highest ideals in a land promising opportunity and equality to all. In May 2022, between her confirmation and formal swearing-in, she attended the American Repertory Theater's revival of "1776," where the founding fathers were portrayed by female, nonbinary, or transgender actors. The effect was galvanizing-marginalized communities reclaiming their place in a narrative that had ignored their voices. She was deeply moved when the cast told her that her confirmation inspired them, and they had included her in the show's photographic montage of history-making Americans. Two months later, she attended "American Prophet: Frederick Douglass in His Own Words," a musical that wove Douglass's writings into conversations and songs. The production resonated deeply, connecting the struggles of her ancestors to ongoing battles for equality. She later brought her law clerks to see it, hoping to provide context for debates about whose history should inform legal interpretation. Through these theatrical experiences, she gained perspective on her own journey. History had its eyes on Constance Baker Motley, and now on her. With supportive parents, a brilliant partner, loyal friends, role models who lit the way, and her beautiful daughters, she has everything needed to meet this moment.
