But would we have spoken against slavery in 1850 or Nazi antisemitism in 1933? Why do we believe we would have spoken then if we're silent now? The "Spiral of Silence" makes it increasingly difficult to speak as time passes. Had we spoken biblical truth about sexuality in earlier decades, the outcry would have been minimal. Now it's far more difficult. Bonhoeffer models how to speak truth with compassion. In his book Ethics, he addresses abortion directly: "Destruction of the embryo in the mother's womb is a violation of the right to live which God has bestowed upon this nascent life... And this is nothing but murder." Yet he shows compassion, acknowledging that "in cases where it is an act of despair, performed in circumstances of extreme human or economic destitution and misery, the guilt may often lie rather with the community than with the individual."
