For depressed men, reconfiguring masculinity can become a matter of life and death. Men who refuse to face their own pain often inflict it on others. Trauma creates a double injury in men-the trauma itself and the sense of being "emasculated" by victimhood. Researcher David Lisak found that traumatized men respond in two distinct ways: some become "hypermasculine" and potentially dangerous, while others question and rewrite the criteria for manhood. The latter group, though still carrying damage, develop a functioning internal adult that allows them to break cycles of violence. Tracy Deagen exemplified violence born from childhood trauma. Raised by a "functionally psychotic" father who punished children with scalding water and forced siblings to participate in each other's torture, Tracy became a man who sought roadside brawls as his favorite pastime. But when Noley declared his intention to become a painter, his father gathered a "posse" that forcibly returned him to Baton Rouge. Noley subsequently entered banking, married conventionally, and fell into a chronic, mean depression, dying at fifty-eight "for no particular reason." At fifty-two, Henry "squandered" his family fortune purchasing and restoring a beloved Victorian office building ("Henry's Folly"). For six years, he and his four teenage sons lovingly worked on it, but when the real estate market crashed, Henry sank into despair, believing he'd robbed his children of their rightful inheritance. In therapy, Henry reframed his story-he wasn't a failure but a quester who had given his sons the gift of art and passion that his father had been denied. All four had become recognized artists. Many sons carrying their fathers' depression must confront not just their own pain, but their father's unacknowledged suffering. Looking back, I recognize how my father's trauma shaped him-how he "hated passivity, dependency" while actually becoming increasingly dependent on his wife, who kept the family afloat financially. My father's life spiraled downward through failed careers and schemes until Lou Gehrig's disease began its assault in his fifties. I reflect that my father "never quite granted himself permission to survive" after his childhood trauma.

These rigid gender roles emerged during the industrial revolution, when production moved outside the home. Men became wage earners while women managed domestic life, creating artificial divisions between work and home, public and private spheres. This spawned what I call the "core collusion"-men sacrificing emotional needs for workplace success, while women abandoned achievement needs to care for everything else. Traditional men often expect "emotional pornography"-an idealized wife who's simultaneously nurturing, seductive, and compliant without criticism. However, when men understand these old roles no longer work, they often excel at learning new relationship skills. Research reveals men may actually be more emotionally sensitive than women-male babies show greater separation distress, and adult men have stronger physiological responses to emotional arousal. Men's emotional avoidance likely stems not from reduced capacity but from experiencing feelings as overwhelming.

The greatest cost of traditional masculinity's hierarchical dynamic is the deprivation of communion. Service-not dominance-should be the organizing force of mature manhood. A grown man with nothing to devote himself to is "sick at heart," yet many men serve only their reflected value while their families need something different. I introduce "the wisdom of relationship"-the ecological understanding that caring for the contexts we live within promotes our own growth. This isn't about selfishness versus altruism, but about shortsighted greed versus farsighted wisdom. Just as a manufacturer might forgo profits to avoid polluting where his children play, a man "gives in" to his wife's preferences not because he's lost, but because he's preserving a relationship valuable to him. Studies show that men with warm, nurturant relationships with their children are healthier, less depressed, and more successful in their careers-suggesting men need to father as much as children need fathers. As women enter the workforce, feminism advances, and business structures become more cooperative, traditional gender arrangements are reshuffling. The old paradigm of worth through dominance no longer fits our complex, interdependent world. I draw parallels between men's depression and environmental issues, citing Al Gore's "Earth in the Balance," which likens ecological problems to addiction in dysfunctional families.
