Driving from the airport, Ned Mahoney and Alex join an emergency conference call about Theodore "Teddy" Vance. Secret Service's Angela Riordan resists their approach, insisting they can't arrest the First Gentleman. FBI Assistant Director Luke Hamel clarifies they just want to question him as a person of interest. They gather on the Kennedy Center's River Terrace while the party continues inside. The building is locked down under a "crash condition"-no one in or out until the First Gentleman leaves. Dan Cormorant emerges in his tux, reporting to Riordan that they're ready. She instructs him to ensure a quiet exit, and he returns inside, radioing orders. Teddy immediately senses something wrong when Cormorant approaches him. After Maggie smoothly covers with a smile, Teddy kisses her cheek and whispers "I love you" before following the agent. Once away from others, Cormorant reveals the FBI wants to question him. Teddy panics, accusing Cormorant of walking him "right into them." As Cormorant emerges with Theodore Vance, they pause before reaching the door. When Cormorant pockets his mic and they exchange words, Riordan grows concerned. Just as Vance steps through the door, Cormorant's jacket flips up. Before Alex can draw his Glock, Cormorant fires a .357 into the back of Vance's head. Chaos erupts-Cormorant is shot by other agents, hundreds of guests scream and run for exits, and Secret Service rushes the president to safety. Though it's too early for official theories, Alex believes Cormorant is a patriot who executed Vance as the last act in a bloody cover-up-a suicide assassination and final piece of damage control for his president.

Phoenix Rising: Renewal and Hope

I arrive home around four-thirty, exhausted after the night's events, only to find Bree gone. Aunt Tia's knitting bag reveals she's come to watch the kids while Bree covers my hospital vigil with Nana. Though tempted to head back out, I decide to spell Bree in the morning instead. Lying awake, I contemplate the vast scope of what's happened-we may never know how many victims like Caroline there were or the full extent of the Zeus cover-up. Before I can rest, the phone rings-it's Zadie Mitchell from the hospital. I race to St. Anthony's, running my siren the whole way and sprinting up four flights to Nana's room. There I find Bree with tears streaming down her face-and Nana Mama with her eyes open. Regina Hope Cross, the toughest person I've ever known, isn't done with us yet. Her voice is barely a crackle when she asks what took me so long, announcing "I'm back." Though still connected to IVs and an A-V line, she's off the ventilator and feeding tubes. When she asks what she missed, I tell her "nothing much"-the world stopped spinning without her. The holiday season flies by with Damon home from college and Nana mobile enough by New Year's Eve to prepare a crown roast for our family dinner. New Year's Day begins quietly-listening to Ha Jin with Nana, making brunch for the kids, then asking Bree for a countryside drive. She's delighted when she realizes we're heading to Catoctin Mountain Park, our sentimental favorite where we first vacationed together. Bree and I have the snow-covered Cunningham Falls trail completely to ourselves. After joking about ridiculous New Year's resolutions, I reveal my true one-"to see if I can't get the woman I love to marry me." I pull out Nana's ring, explaining I'd planned to propose on my birthday before Caroline's case interrupted everything. When Bree asks if I'm sure this is the right time, I tell her now is perfect. She embraces me inside my coat, kissing me for a long time before saying yes-yes to me, yes to "our amazing family." We celebrate with Szechuan takeout and champagne with Sampson and Billie, who are nearly as excited as we are. Later in bed, as Bree and I discuss a summer wedding, my cell phone rings. I groan and pull a pillow over my head, declaring my resolution to never answer phones again. Bree hands it to me anyway, saying, "I'm marrying a cop. Cops answer their calls." The voice on the line is a nightmare-Kyle Craig, the Mastermind, congratulating us on our engagement. When I ask why he's really calling, he admits he's bored: "Nobody plays with me the way you do." He offers a respite as his "wedding present" but warns me not to get too comfortable. "Nothing lasts forever," he reminds me before ending with chilling words: "Here's to fun."
