In a startling rhetorical leap, he suggested minimum wage laws denied people "opportunity for earned success" and contributed to conditions like those that led to "the rise and fall of the Third Reich." To "earn the respect and good feeling" of the middle third, the Kochs began forming and publicizing partnerships with unlikely allies like the United Negro College Fund and the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. These alliances were explicitly designed to counteract criticism that they were negative or divisive. The Kochs viewed academia as a "great investment" and "significant competitive advantage" for their political movement. Fred Wertheimer, Washington's veteran crusader against political corruption, called the amount "mind-boggling" and "unheard of in the history of the country." He saw it as a fundamental threat to democracy: "We have two unelected multibillionaires who want to control the U.S. government and exercise the power to decide what is best for more than 300 million American people." The Kochs' personal fortunes had nearly tripled during Obama's presidency, from $14 billion each in 2009 to $41.6 billion by 2015, despite their predictions that his administration would be catastrophic for the American economy.
