The second wave brought the internet mainstream in the late 1990s and early 2000s. By 2000, over half of Americans were online, compared to just 3% in 1995. This wave split into two distinct cohorts defined not by age or technical skill but by how they integrated the internet into their social lives.
Full Internet People came online in the late 1990s to early 2000s, joining an internet with established norms they absorbed implicitly from peers. Unlike Old Internet People seeking escape, they used the internet primarily to communicate with existing friends through instant messaging platforms like AIM and MSN Messenger. Their screennames were identity performances rather than anonymity shields - TarnishedDreamZ wasn't a stranger but Kayla from school. While they maintained the link between online and offline identities, they reshaped informal writing to convey the full range of human emotions.
Semi Internet People also came online during this period, but primarily for work purposes rather than social connection. They gradually expanded to functional tasks like reading news and shopping before cautiously dipping into social aspects. Unlike Full Internet People who learned internet language through immersion, Semi Internet People sought explicit guides like "Wired Style." They excel at email with complex folder systems and formal etiquette, and their cultural touchstones are chain emails rather than Flash animations.
The third wave came online after the internet became unavoidable, representing both the youngest users who never knew life without it (Post Internet People) and older reluctant adopters who could no longer avoid it (Pre Internet People). Both groups share a notable lack of relationship with email, often skipping directly to social media and chat apps.
Pre Internet People typically have a single online account set up by a more tech-savvy person, perhaps on "the Facebook." They don't use internet slang or acronyms like "LOL," viewing them as signals of membership in a community they don't identify with. Instead, they use distinctive punctuation patterns - strings of periods, dashes or commas to separate thoughts ("thank you all for the birthday wishes - great to hear from so many old friends - hope you all are doing well").
Post Internet People don't remember their first time using a computer or going online. The internet is simply part of their social landscape. The dividing line between Full and Post Internet People is often whether you got Facebook before or after your parents. Post Internet People faced an especially dire version of "context collapse" - when people from all your overlapping friend groups see your shared posts. While adults might find this a minor issue, for young people it's a collective problem: they need space to figure out their identity without constant supervision.

When communicating online, we don't want to sound like emotionless robots. While novelists and poets traditionally bridge the gap between writing and emotions, everyday internet users need practical ways to express nuance in real-time conversations without the luxury of multiple drafts or edits.
The baseline for communication differs between generations. For internet-oriented writers, the most neutral way to indicate an utterance is with a new line or message break - efficient in digital media where scrolling is easy. For those with offline-oriented linguistic norms, the neutral separator is a dash or string of dots (ellipses).
All caps has become the quintessential way to express shouting or strong emotions online, but its history predates the internet. While all caps makes happy messages seem happier, it doesn't necessarily intensify sad messages. Single capped words serve as emphasis markers, similar to how we emphasize words in speech.
Though all caps feels like internet slang, it dates back to at least the 1940s, with references to "shouting in capital letters" appearing as early as 1856. The prevalence of all caps online partly stems from early computer limitations - Morse code and early systems like the Apple II only supported uppercase letters to save memory.
Despite early internet communication being characterized by flamewars and misunderstood sarcasm, the coldness was merely a temporary learning curve. A 1999 study revealed that people who typed more words online were significantly more polite - using their increased typing fluency to maintain the same politeness level they'd use in speech.
The exclamation mark has been repurposed to indicate warmth rather than just excitement. A 2006 study found exclamation marks in emails indicated friendliness 32% of the time and emphasized facts 29.5% of the time, while indicating actual excitement only 9.5% of the time. This shift has made exclamation marks quasi-obligatory in friendly communication, as satirized by The Onion's article about a "stone-hearted ice witch" who sent a thank-you email without any.

Ironic typography creates social connection through shared understanding. Some emoji, like the eggplant or smiling poo, have developed specific cultural meanings beyond their literal representation. The eggplant functions as a phallic symbol, while the poo emoji softly expresses displeasure. These emblematic uses extend beyond emoji to other digital communications - Snapchat lets users "use your face as the emoticon," while animated GIFs frequently display emblematic gestures.
Beyond emblematic gestures are the harder-to-describe co-speech or illustrative gestures that accompany our everyday speech. Research shows we gesture even when it's communicatively useless - on the phone or between blind people - suggesting these gestures are more about the speaker's thinking process than the listener's understanding.
Despite media hype about emoji storytelling, extended emoji-only messages are extremely rare. Analysis with SwiftKey revealed emoji function more like gestures than words - showing repetition patterns fundamentally different from word sequences. About half of common emoji sequences were pure repetition (like multiple laughing-crying faces), while others showed complex repetition or thematically related strings.
If emoji function as gestures, why did it take so long to develop a way to write our gestures? We've actually been trying for centuries. While David Crystal observed "Dear David" as the most common greeting in 2001, this form has become increasingly uncommon for younger generations who find "dear" oddly intimate rather than formal. This reflects a centuries-long trend toward shorter, less descriptive greetings. Historical letters featured elaborate salutations like "To the Right noble, and Valorous," while closing with phrases like "Your Obedient Servant" - phrases that were once routine but now seem ironic or overly formal.
Conversation is fundamentally built on turns, a rhythm we learn before we even acquire language. As babies, our caregivers treat our gurgles as meaningful contributions, teaching us the back-and-forth pattern of dialogue. But this turn-taking isn't based on pauses - we typically transition between speakers with minimal delay, often predicting when someone will finish speaking.
The breakthrough in digital conversation came in 1980 with CB Simulator, which treated chat as a stream of turns rather than concurrent typing spaces. This radio-inspired format allowed multiple participants without the chaos of overlapping voices. By 1988, Internet Relay Chat (IRC) had solidified this approach, enabling multiple simultaneous conversations that users could follow despite their interleaved nature.
Chat has proven remarkably durable for four decades despite technological evolution. Its stream format accommodates multiple interwoven conversation threads, making it the perfect intersection of written and informal language. Unlike formal writing, chat embraces interruptions and high information density. The "is typing" indicator, read receipts, and other features have evolved with our devices, but the core stream format remains unchanged.
The most successful social media posts strike a balance between obscurity and accessibility, creating in-group appeal that encourages engagement from specific segments of our audience. Online information often exists in a state of "obscurity" rather than strict privacy. Four factors determine online obscurity: searchability, access restrictions, identifiability, and comprehensibility. Even public content can remain effectively private if people don't know it exists, who wrote it, or what it means.

The concept of "memes" originated with Richard Dawkins in 1976 as ideological counterparts to genes - ideas that spread through social selection and fitness rather than physical reproduction. The book metaphor has run its course. Just as brain analogies evolved from steam engines to computers, our language metaphors need updating. The internet offers the perfect new metaphor for language. Like Wikipedia or the decentralized network of websites, language is a network, a web - humanity's most spectacular open source project.
Language spreads through our conversations like we find things on the internet by following links. We each inhabit our own idiosyncratic corner of the internet, just as we each speak a slightly different idiolect informed by our unique linguistic history.
When we thought of language as a book, we saw it as static, authoritative, and finite. But language as a network is flexible, emergent, and infinite. Any person can create a sentence never before uttered - even something simple like "The otters enjoyed the moon" yields zero Google hits. Our creative linguistic capacity exceeds our entire recorded history.
The internet will soon be ambient for all generations. There won't be "internet people" versus others - just as no one can escape books or telephones. We should avoid calling offline life "real life" because the internet has become real life. Language's changeability is its strength, allowing it to survive where more rigid systems would break.
