Yukio Mishima

生年: January 14, 1925 – Tokyo, Tokyo, Japan

Yukio Mishima was a Japanese novelist, playwright, and essayist whose work explored beauty, death, sexuality, and nationalism. Best known for Confessions of a Mask, The Temple of the Golden Pavilion, and the Sea of Fertility tetralogy, he became one of the 20th century’s most internationally translated and discussed Japanese authors.

経歴と著者の歩み

Yukio Mishima, born Kimitake Hiraoka in Tokyo on January 14, 1925, emerged from a childhood shaped by fragility, discipline, and intense literary ambition. Raised for a time under the watch of his aristocratic grandmother, he grew up in an atmosphere of constraint that sharpened both his sensitivity and his attraction to performance, beauty, and control. He attended the prestigious Gakushuin school, where he began writing seriously while still young, often in tension with a father who viewed literature as impractical. The wartime years marked an early turning point: Mishima was briefly examined for military service but was not drafted, an experience that deepened his sense of survival, shame, and destiny. After studying law at Tokyo Imperial University and working briefly in a government ministry, he chose literature decisively over bureaucratic life.
