Plato was an ancient Greek philosopher and writer whose dialogues explored ethics, politics, metaphysics, and epistemology. Best known for The Republic, the Symposium, and the Apology, he founded the Academy in Athens. His works, written in dialogue form, have influenced Western philosophy, education, and political thought for more than two millennia.
Plato was born around 428 or 427 BCE, probably in Athens, into an aristocratic family shaped by politics, public life, and the upheavals of the Peloponnesian War. Ancient sources suggest his birth name may have been Aristocles, with “Plato” becoming a nickname, possibly referring to his broad build. He received the education expected of an Athenian elite: poetry, music, gymnastics, and philosophy. The decisive intellectual turning point of his early life was his association with Socrates. Through that relationship, Plato encountered a model of inquiry grounded in questioning, moral seriousness, and distrust of easy opinion. The execution of Socrates in 399 BCE marked the central rupture of Plato’s life. It deepened his suspicion of unstable democratic politics and redirected his ambition from public office toward philosophy.
