Homer is the traditionally credited ancient Greek epic poet of the Iliad and the Odyssey, foundational works of Western literature centered on war, heroism, and homecoming. Though his life remains uncertain, his poems have been translated into countless languages and have shaped literature, education, and storytelling for millennia.
Homer stands at the beginning of Western literature as both a historical possibility and a legendary figure. Almost nothing certain survives about his early life, and even his existence as a single identifiable author has long been debated. Ancient tradition places him in the Greek-speaking eastern Aegean, often in Ionia, sometime in the ninth or eighth century BCE, and later stories describe him as a blind singer. In that sense, his “education” is best understood not as formal schooling but as apprenticeship in an oral tradition: mastery of memory, meter, inherited story patterns, and public performance. The central turning point in his career, insofar as it can be reconstructed, was the shaping of long-circulating heroic material into epic poems of unusual scale, unity, and emotional force.
