There is currently no field-wide standard for how to validate these automated judges. These evaluator models can be biased toward longer or more polite answers and are highly sensitive to prompt phrasing. Without standardized "adjudication procedures" to explain how scores are determined or how ties are broken, the resulting evaluations can become a "house of mirrors" where the results change based on tiny rubric adjustments.
A high-quality evaluation should provide a "reproducibility path," including detailed experimental settings and hyperparameter searches. Users should look for "uncertainty quantification," which means the researchers performed multiple runs and reported the mean and standard deviation rather than a single snapshot score. Finally, reliable reporting should include "BenchmarkCards" or similar documentation that explains exactly what population the benchmark represents and what it is intended to measure, ensuring the test is actually relevant to the specific real-world use case.
