Explore the history of Tullahoma, Tennessee, from its origins as a railroad camp to its unique naming myths involving Choctaw words and a favorite horse.

It’s a place that’s always been about 'the next frontier,' whether that was the railroad in 1852 or Mach 20 flight today.
I want to learn about the town of Tullahoma, Tennessee and it’s history. I’d like to cover from the beginning to current day. Feel free to highlight interesting people associated with the town as well. I’m tired altogether in an interesting story.

The name Tullahoma is widely believed to be derived from the Choctaw word 'tʋli homma,' which translates to 'red rock.' This melodic name reflects the area's deep historical roots. However, local lore also suggests a different origin involving a horse named after a Choctaw chief, showcasing the multiple layers of history and legend that define this Tennessee town's unique identity.
Peter Decherd was a significant figure in Tennessee history who donated the land for the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad right of way. Because of his contribution, he was given the opportunity to name two stops along the line. He named one stop Decherd after himself and the other Tullahoma, which was reportedly the name of his favorite horse, further complicating the town's naming mystery.
Before it became a recognized town in 1852, Tullahoma began its life as a humble work camp. It was established to support the construction of the Nashville and Chattanooga Railroad. This transition from a temporary railroad camp to a permanent settlement marks the beginning of Tullahoma's development, eventually leading to its modern reputation and historical significance within the state of Tennessee.
