Without the movement of nitrogen through the environment, plants cannot grow and the entire biological system would grind to a halt.
Atmospheric nitrogen exists as dinitrogen gas, or N2, where two atoms are held together by a triple bond. This triple bond is one of the strongest chemical bonds in nature, effectively locking the nitrogen behind a chemical vault. Because our bodies lack the energy to break this bond, we cannot process the gas form. We must rely on the nitrogen cycle to 'fix' the element into a usable form that can be integrated into biological structures.
