Are we the masters of our fate or just vehicles for our DNA? Explore how genetic self-interest drives everything from family conflict to altruism.

Meilleure citation de The Selfish Gene: Life as a Survival Machine

    “

We are survival machines—robot vehicles blindly programmed to preserve the selfish molecules known as genes. However, we are the only species on Earth that can actually rebel against our replicators and choose a path that isn't dictated by genetic or memetic self-interest.

    The Selfish Gene

    Foire aux questions

The term "selfish" does not mean that genes have conscious desires or motives. Instead, it describes a mechanical reality of evolution: genes that act in ways that ensure their own survival and replication into the next generation are the ones that persist. This "selfishness" at the molecular level can actually result in selfless behavior at the individual level, such as a mother risking her life for her children, because those children carry copies of her genes.

Genes act like computer programmers rather than puppet masters. Because biological responses are too slow for real-time control, genes build a biological computer—the brain—and load it with rules, instincts, and strategies. They engineer systems like negative feedback loops (such as thirst or hunger) and the ability to simulate the future, which allow the "survival machine" to make independent decisions that generally favor the genes' long-term survival.

A meme is a unit of cultural transmission, such as a melody, an idea, or a fashion trend, that spreads from brain to brain through imitation. While genes are biological replicators, memes are cultural replicators. They compete for limited "brain time" and attention. Unlike genes, memes do not need to provide a biological advantage to survive; an idea can be successful simply because it is catchy or psychologically appealing, even if it is harmful to the person carrying it.

Animals often use ritualized displays and restraint because of an Evolutionarily Stable Strategy (ESS). Using game theory, biology shows that all-out aggression (the "Hawk" strategy) can be more dangerous and costly than a strategy of bluffing or retreating (the "Dove" strategy). A population eventually reaches a balance where restraint becomes the most beneficial strategy for an individual's genetic survival, as it avoids the high risk of serious injury or death.

The extended phenotype is the idea that a gene's influence reaches beyond the physical body of the organism it inhabits. This includes the structures an animal builds, like a beaver's dam or a bird's nest, which are created based on genetic instructions to aid survival. It also includes the way genes in one organism can manipulate the behavior of another, such as a parasite "brainwashing" its host to serve the parasite's own reproductive needs.
