Engaging in high-energy activities like hitting a punching bag or shouting can actually keep your anger levels high rather than helping you calm down or get it out of your system.

    High-intensity exercise, such as going for a run, can increase anger because of physiological arousal. Anger is already a high-arousal state characterized by a spiking heart rate, increased blood pressure, and a flood of adrenaline. When you engage in vigorous physical activity while angry, you are adding more arousal to an already overloaded system, which can reinforce the feeling of anger rather than diffusing it.

    The myth of blowing off steam is the long-held idea that aggressive or high-energy actions are necessary to release pent-up rage. This concept is often reinforced by movies showing people destroying objects to feel better. However, research into emotional regulation shows that these actions often backfire. Instead of providing relief, these high-arousal activities can maintain or even increase the physiological symptoms associated with being furious.
