The 'secret sauce' of two-dimensional kinematics is that horizontal and vertical motions are completely independent of each other. What happens horizontally doesn't care about what's happening vertically, and vice versa.

    Foire aux questions

Kinematics is the mathematical description of motion, derived from a Greek term. It focuses on how objects move through space and time without necessarily addressing the forces involved. To study kinematics effectively, one must establish a coordinate system or reference frame, which acts as a mental map for defining an object's position and movement accurately.

Richard Feynman noted that attempting to define every term perfectly, such as what it means to know something or even the definition of a person, can lead to a total paralysis of thought. In physics, this means we often rely on a gentleman's agreement regarding certain foundational concepts, like coordinate systems, to begin the practical work of describing the physical world.

The distinction between displacement and distance is a fundamental concept in kinematics. Distance refers to the total ground covered, while displacement is a vector that measures the change in position from the starting point. For example, if you walk ten blocks east and ten blocks back west, your total distance is twenty blocks, but your displacement is zero.

Reference frames and coordinate systems are essential because they provide the necessary structure to describe where an object is located. In a simple one-dimensional scenario, such as a car on a straight track, a coordinate system requires an origin point called zero, a single axis, and a designated positive direction to make motion mathematically measurable.
