The Celebrity Treatment: Fawning as a Survival Strategy

    “

The 'celebrity treatment' is actually a shield. By making the other person the center of the universe, you’re essentially staying off their radar or keeping them in a 'good mood' so they don’t turn on you.

    Foire aux questions

The fawn response is a neurological survival and appeasement strategy used to navigate the world by ensuring others feel like stars. Unlike quiet people-pleasing, it often involves high-energy efforts to manage the emotions of others to maintain peace and safety. It is frequently developed in environments where safety is conditional, leading individuals to prioritize the needs and moods of others over their own well-being.

Treating others like celebrities is an intentional performance used to manage relationships and ensure emotional safety. By putting people on massive pedestals and running a metaphorical PR campaign for them, individuals use fawning as a business-like tactic to prevent others from becoming upset. This behavior acts as a shield, where making someone else feel good becomes a primary method for avoiding conflict and ensuring personal security.

While often confused with quiet people-pleasing or being a wallflower, fawning can be a high-energy performance similar to being a talent manager for everyone else. It is a specific appeasement strategy rooted in the psychology of survival. Rather than just being 'nice,' it is a heavy, intentional effort to manage the environment by elevating others, which helps the individual navigate social dynamics where they might otherwise feel at risk.
