The tension in the city of 20,000 people reached a breaking point over the presence of troops and the symbolic Liberty Pole, leading to a confrontation where New York City was already bleeding for the cause of independence.
The conflict was fueled by years of British troops being quartered in Lower Manhattan, forcing locals to pay for the soldiers' firewood, bedding, and grog. Beyond the financial burden, soldiers competed with local laborers for work, making the struggle deeply personal. The primary flashpoint was a wooden flagpole known as the Liberty Pole, which the Sons of Liberty viewed as a Memorial to Freedom while British soldiers mocked it as a mere piece of wood, leading to repeated confrontations.
