    “

While the electrical signal travels at nearly the speed of light, the electrons themselves are just drifting along at a fraction of a millimeter per second; if you were an electron starting at your car battery, it would take you over fifty minutes just to reach the starter motor.

    Foire aux questions

While many assume electrons travel at the speed of light, their physical movement, known as drift velocity, is surprisingly slow. In reality, electrons move at a fraction of a millimeter per second, which is comparable to the pace of a snail. For example, it could take an electron over fifty minutes to travel from a car battery to the starter motor, even though the electrical signal itself appears to be instantaneous.

The electric signal is a change in the electric field that propagates at a significant fraction of the speed of light, allowing devices to power on immediately. In contrast, the individual electrons providing the electrical current move very slowly through the conductor. This is similar to a garden hose full of water where the pressure wave travels instantly to the nozzle, even if the water molecules themselves are moving at a much slower rate.

Electrical current is often visualized as the pressure that pushes charge through a circuit, while resistance is the friction that the flow encounters. This episode of The Slow Drift of Electricity explores why different materials allow charge to flow more freely than others. By understanding the physics of electricity, we can see how the interaction between the electric field and electron movement defines the behavior of the circuits we use every day.
