Explore Senegal's race for food sovereignty as it modernizes its agricultural sector to combat climate change, food imports, and global price volatility.

Agriculture isn't just about food—it’s the engine for the entire 2050 National Transformation Agenda. It’s about making agriculture 'aspirational' for the next generation, not just a survival strategy.

The agricultural sector serves as the backbone of Senegal, supporting approximately 62 percent of the rural population and employing over 38 percent of the country's total workforce. Despite its importance, the sector faces significant challenges from global price volatility and climate change. Currently, Senegal has become a net importer of food products due to rapid urbanization and population growth, making the shift toward food sovereignty a critical national priority.
Senegal is pursuing food sovereignty through a mix of billion-dollar national agendas and grassroots initiatives aimed at reducing reliance on food imports. Key strategies include a total structural overhaul known as the AgriConnect Senegal Compact, which focuses on modernizing food systems. These efforts involve implementing high-tech digital weather services for farmers and restoring eighty thousand hectares of degraded land in the Sahel to improve local production and food security.
Food security in Senegal is currently threatened by external shocks such as inflation, trade restrictions, and global price volatility. Additionally, environmental factors like climate change and land degradation in the Sahel region pose significant risks to local farming. The country is racing to modernize its agricultural infrastructure to protect its population from these precarious economic and environmental conditions while managing the demands of a growing urban population.
