    Foire aux questions

Seneca suggests practicing "depth over breadth" by picking a few great thinkers or solid ideas and sitting with them deeply rather than flitting from one thing to another. He recommends extracting just one valuable thought each day to digest thoroughly. This approach addresses what he called "scattered reading," which he viewed as a sign of a disordered mind that prevents anything from truly sinking in.

Voluntary simplicity is the practice of intentionally choosing a harder path for a short period, such as wearing plain clothes, eating simple food, or sleeping on a hard bed. Seneca recommended this as a rehearsal for the mind to prove that you can survive and remain yourself even if you lost your wealth or status. By asking "Is this what I feared?" during these periods, you train yourself to no longer be enslaved by pleasure or the fear of poverty.

Seneca distinguished between "instrumental friendships" based on utility or business and true friendships based on character. He advised judging a person’s character thoroughly before becoming their friend, but once that bond is formed, sharing everything with them. He believed that while a person should be internally self-sufficient, they should still desire friends because humans are naturally social creatures.

This practice involves mentally envisioning worst-case scenarios like loss, sickness, or exile before they happen. Rather than being pessimistic, Seneca argued this is a form of preparation that strengthens the spirit. By realizing that these challenges are a common "law of life" rather than personal attacks from the universe, you lose your fear of them and are able to face actual adversity with more bravery.

Seneca believed that while your internal life and moral compass should differ from the crowd, your outward appearance should generally conform to social norms. He advised against making a scene by wearing rags or acting like a martyr, as this only invites unnecessary conflict. The goal is to be a functional participant in society while ensuring that your internal reason, rather than the "vibes" of the crowd, is in the driver's seat.
