    “

It’s a story about how one person’s refusal to accept 'that's just the way it is' can spark a movement that saves over 140,000 lives. This same selfless spirit still powers every rescue today, over two centuries later.

The RNLI was founded by Sir William Hillary, a resident of the Isle of Man who witnessed the devastating reality of shipwrecks in the early 19th century. At a time when drowning was considered an occupational hazard and 1,800 wrecks occurred annually, Hillary envisioned a dedicated team of brave individuals ready to risk their lives to save strangers. Despite initial rejection from the Admiralty, his determination led to the establishment of an organized rescue service that has lasted two centuries.

The organization was officially signed into existence on March 4, 1824. The historic founding took place during a meeting at the City of London Tavern, a popular London pub. Thirty eminent gentlemen, including a member of Parliament and a shipping magnate, gathered there to support Sir William Hillary’s vision. This meeting marked the beginning of what would become a world-famous maritime lifesaving charity dedicated to sea rescue.

Before the RNLI was established in 1824, maritime safety was virtually non-existent, and shipwrecks were a constant, terrifying reality. With an average of 1,800 wrecks happening every year, the chances of survival for sailors and passengers were incredibly slim. There was no organized rescue service at the time, meaning most people simply accepted the high risk of drowning as an unavoidable part of life at sea until Sir William Hillary intervened.
