    Foire aux questions

In the Ontario justice system, being a lawyer involves more than just representing a client's interests. Every lawyer is technically an officer of every court of record in the province. This status signifies that they are a vital component of the justice system with a duty to the court itself, ensuring that civil procedure remains fair and grounded in legal ethics.

According to the Rules of Professional Conduct (RPC) in Ontario, the definition of a client extends beyond a signed contract. A lawyer-client relationship is established if a person consults a lawyer and reasonably concludes that the lawyer has agreed to provide representation. This ensures that legal professionals remain responsible for the advice and services they provide during consultations.

The Rules of Professional Conduct are very specific regarding financial arrangements in civil litigation. The RPC dictates that all legal fees must be fair and reasonable. Furthermore, these fees must be disclosed to the client early in the relationship to maintain transparency and fairness, preventing unexpected costs as the legal matter progresses through the Ontario court system.
