While the whirlwind is necessary for keeping the ministry running, it often results in leaders feeling like they are sprinting without actually moving the needle on what matters most.

How does a "Wildly Important Goal" (WIG) differ from a standard mission statement?

A mission statement is often broad and vague, such as "making disciples," which is difficult to track on a daily basis. In contrast, a WIG must have a specific finish line using the formula "From X to Y by when." For example, instead of "increasing student involvement," a WIG would be "increasing active student volunteers from 30% to 50% by May 1st." This specificity provides the team with a single, measurable target that remains visible even when the whirlwind is blowing.

What is the difference between a lag measure and a lead measure?

A lag measure tracks the ultimate result you are trying to achieve, such as total attendance or the number of student leaders; by the time you see these numbers, the performance that drove them is already in the past. A lead measure tracks the specific, controllable activities that predict the success of the lag measure. For instance, while you cannot control if a student says "yes" to leadership (lag), you can control how many one-on-one vision-casting meetings you hold each week (lead).

Why is a "players' scoreboard" essential for team engagement?

A players' scoreboard is a simple, visual tool that allows team members to determine if they are winning or losing within five seconds. Unlike a complex "coach's scoreboard" filled with spreadsheets, a players' scoreboard focuses on a few key metrics and shows the "target line" versus the "actual line." When progress is visible, it shifts the team's mindset from just doing work to actively winning a game, which increases morale and collective ownership of the goal.

What happens during a weekly "WIG session"?

A WIG session is a sacred 20 to 30-minute weekly meeting where the whirlwind is strictly prohibited. The meeting follows a three-part structure: Account, Review, and Plan. Team members account for the commitments they made the previous week, review the scoreboard to see if their actions are moving the lag measures, and then make one or two specific "SMART" commitments for the upcoming week.
