Originally known as Big Spring Ranch, the program launched with just four boys during its first summer. Sanborn Western Camps was founded by the husband-and-wife duo Laura and Roger "Sandy" Sanborn. Sandy was a veteran of the elite Tenth Mountain Division, where he received specialized training in mountain warfare during World War II. This experience gave him a deep understanding of the transformative power of rugged terrain. Together, the couple applied their rugged mountain twist to the American Dream, growing a small experiment in outdoor living into a major operation that now serves hundreds of children.
When Big Spring Ranch first opened in 1948, it was a modest operation with no massive infrastructure or marketing team, hosting only four boys in its inaugural season. Over the decades, the legacy of Sanborn Western Camps has grown significantly from that initial grand experiment in outdoor living.
