What is the difference between a "skill gap" and a "will gap"?

A skill gap occurs when a teammate lacks the actual training or ability to perform a task, often masking this as "too hard" out of a fear of looking incompetent. In contrast, a will gap is a choice not to engage, often rooted in a lack of motivation, a failure to see how the task connects to the larger mission, or a lack of respect for the leader's authority. Diagnosing the difference requires looking at the employee's history to see if they are failing across the board or hitting a wall with one specific type of task.

What is "Ruinous Empathy" and why is it dangerous in ministry?

Ruinous Empathy occurs when a leader cares for a person personally but fails to challenge them directly. In a church setting, this often happens when leaders try to be "nicer than Jesus" by avoiding tough conversations to spare feelings. This approach is dangerous because it allows subpar work to continue, which eventually demoralizes high-performing team members, creates silos, and hinders the overall mission of the organization.

How can a leader use the CORE model to provide better feedback?

The CORE model helps remove personal attacks from feedback by focusing on four specific areas: Context, Observation, Result, and nExt steps. Instead of criticizing a person's character, a leader describes the specific situation (Context), what they saw happen (Observation), the negative impact it had on the team or mission (Result), and the specific behavior required moving forward (nExt steps). This provides the employee with a clear roadmap for improvement rather than a vague sense of failure.

What is a "Reset Conversation" and how should it be structured?

A Reset Conversation is a formal meeting designed to draw a line in the sand and define a path forward when expectations aren't being met. It should be held in a private, neutral setting and begin with a "soft entry" that affirms the relationship. The leader then uses "Gap Theory" to explain the difference between the expected standard and current reality, followed by an open-ended question like "Can you help me understand what is getting in the way?" to invite the employee into the solution.

Why is documentation important even in a small church or ministry setting?

Documentation is essential because it provides absolute clarity for the employee and protects the ministry legally. Since memories are selective, writing down the details of meetings, offered training, and agreed-upon deadlines ensures that both parties are on the same page. It prevents a "forest fire" of conflict later on by keeping "short accounts" and proving that the leader has been grace-filled and generous with warnings and support before taking disciplinary action.
