"Insomnia" was actually a last-minute afterthought created to balance out the tracklist for the album Reverence. The music was composed by Rollo and Sister Bliss in a single day, and Maxi Jazz wrote the lyrics in just fifteen minutes before recording his vocals in forty-five minutes. Rather than being about club culture, the lyrics were inspired by a painful dental abscess that kept Maxi Jazz awake, reflecting a state of existential anxiety rather than a celebration of nightlife.
Faithless transformed dance music from "mindless hedonism" into an intellectually and spiritually rigorous art form. By combining Sister Bliss’s classical multi-instrumental training, Rollo’s complex production, and Maxi Jazz’s Buddhist-influenced "sermons," they proved that electronic music could have a soul. They treated the dance floor as a sanctuary or a place of worship, addressing serious themes like inner peace, social responsibility, and political conflict.
Following the passing of Maxi Jazz in 2022, the band entered a period of reflection before deciding to evolve rather than stop. They released the album Champion Sound in 2025, which served as a "love letter" to their history and featured Maxi Jazz’s final recorded vocal. Their 2024 and 2026 tours were redesigned as celebrations of his life, using state-of-the-art visuals and new arrangements of classic tracks to honor his legacy while introducing fresh material.
Faithless established a "band format" that bridged the gap between club culture and arena spectacles. Instead of a simple laptop or DJ setup, their live shows featured a full band including keyboards, live drums, bassists, and guitarists. This allowed them to create fresh, organic arrangements for their hits every night, making each concert a unique, visceral journey rather than a pre-recorded playback.
