Este proyecto de código abierto proporciona controladores que hablan los idiomas nativos y propietarios de marcas como Siemens o Allen Bradley sin necesidad de modificar el hardware existente ni pagar licencias costosas. PLC4X convierte esos datos industriales en mensajes que Kafka puede entender, permitiendo que sensores de máquinas antiguas envíen información directamente a la nube o a sistemas de análisis.
El PLC-Service Bus rompe el modelo de "monolito" industrial donde todo está rígidamente conectado. Al utilizar un bus de servicios, cada componente de la máquina se vuelve independiente; por ejemplo, se puede actualizar un alimentador de piezas sin afectar al resto de la planta. Además, esta arquitectura facilita la monitorización en tiempo real mediante herramientas de IT estándar como Grafana y permite la "tolerancia a fallos", ya que si un sistema receptor se cae, Kafka almacena los datos y los entrega cuando el sistema vuelve a estar en línea.
No, estas tecnologías son complementarias. OPC-UA es excelente para la automatización detallada y la integración vertical dentro de la máquina, mientras que MQTT es ideal para dispositivos con poco ancho de banda o conexiones inestables. Kafka se sitúa por encima de ellos como la red troncal o "hub" central que unifica todos los flujos de datos. Las fábricas avanzadas suelen usar OPC-UA o MQTT para extraer el dato de la máquina y luego inyectarlo inmediatamente en Kafka para su procesamiento masivo y almacenamiento histórico.
