Fluency isn’t about being perfect or having zero accent; it’s about the flow—being able to hold a conversation without long, agonizing pauses while you search for a verb tense.

    Foire aux questions

The English fluency gap, specifically known as the passive-active gap, is the difference between what a language learner can understand and what they can actually produce. Many learners find they can follow movies or articles easily but struggle to speak when the time comes. This phenomenon occurs when vocabulary and grammar are understood as input but are not yet ready for active output during a conversation.

Reaching conversational fluency, which corresponds to the B2 level on the CEFR scale, is an achievable goal for most learners. Research suggests that if you engage in daily practice, you can reach this level of English proficiency in approximately six to twelve months. The focus at this stage is on the flow of communication rather than achieving perfection or having a dictionary-level vocabulary.

Fluency is not defined by having a perfect accent or knowing every single word in the dictionary. Instead, fluency is about the flow of communication and the ability to hold a conversation without long, agonizing pauses while searching for specific verb tenses. It is about closing the gap between your input and output so that you can express yourself clearly and naturally in various social situations.

This common experience is part of the passive-active gap in language acquisition. Even if you understand the plot of a movie or the jokes in an article, your brain may struggle to retrieve that same vocabulary during active speech. This happens because understanding language (input) is a different skill than producing language (output), and bridging that space requires consistent practice to move words from your passive memory to your active speaking skills.
