    Filippo Brunelleschi fue un orfebre con un ingenio mecánico excepcional que se convirtió en la figura clave del Renacimiento italiano. A diferencia de los arquitectos de carrera de su época, Brunelleschi utilizó su capacidad inventiva para resolver el problema técnico de la catedral de Florencia. Jackson destaca que su enfoque fue el de un detective del pasado, estudiando las ruinas romanas para encontrar soluciones innovadoras que permitieran cerrar el gigantesco vacío de la estructura.

    La catedral de Florencia tenía un agujero de cuarenta metros de ancho en el techo que nadie sabía cómo cerrar. Según explican Blythe y Jackson, los métodos tradicionales de la época requerían una cantidad de madera para andamios que no existía en toda la región. Este vacío se convirtió en un recordatorio de las limitaciones técnicas de la ciudad, generando una gran presión social para terminar el edificio que debía ser la tarjeta de visita de la República.

    Para resolver el desafío arquitectónico en Florencia, Brunelleschi viajó a Roma con el fin de estudiar las ruinas antiguas, específicamente el Panteón de Agripa. Jackson menciona que no lo hizo simplemente para copiar el diseño, sino para entender la lógica constructiva de los antiguos romanos. Este estudio profundo de la ingeniería histórica le permitió desarrollar las técnicas necesarias para construir la cúpula más grande de su mundo sin depender de los métodos fallidos de su tiempo.
