Stage Five: When Life Is Great

Gordon Binder, former CEO of biotechnology giant Amgen, unknowingly delayed the publication of this book by almost five years. The authors had only identified tribal Stages One through Four with numerous examples of each. They believed Stage Four's "we're great" language represented the pinnacle of tribal development-until their encounter with Amgen completely upended their understanding. When the authors visited Amgen, they expected to find tribal pride and competitive focus. Instead, when asked about competitors, employees responded with statements like "We're in competition with cancer" and "Maybe our competitor is inflammatory disease." There was no tribal pride or "We're #1" banners-just a whisper-like tone of innocent wonderment. This represented Stage Five, accounting for just under 2 percent of workplace cultures and marked by "life is great" language devoid of competitors. Jim Clifton, CEO of Gallup, exemplifies this highest level of Tribal Leadership. After acquiring the Gallup name and organization, Clifton moved beyond simply competing with other research firms. The tribe asked, "Are we helping six billion people or just the best corporations?" This question signaled readiness to move beyond Stage Four's competitive focus. Gallup established a new noble cause: "improving the well-being of our clients' organizations and improving the lives of the six billion people on earth." Stage Five tribes often describe a specific moment when they transcended the "we're great" culture. Mike Eruzione, captain of the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team, experienced this when his team beat the Soviet Union. When they faced the Soviets, something remarkable happened-they played not against a competitor but for something bigger: the love of sport, themselves, and their shared values. After winning, there was no tribal pride, only innocent wonderment. "We went back into the locker room, and guys were hugging and crying. We just couldn't believe it," Eruzione recalled in a whisper. A Stage Five tribe acts like a magnet for groups that can help pursue its noble cause. Organizations like Amgen and Gallup partner with many who don't share their exact values, yet maintain strong commitment to their own values. This isn't contradictory-while Stage Three focuses on "my" values and Stage Four on "our" values, Stage Five operates with "resonant" values. Different organizations with complementary values can work together effectively. Tribal Leaders often "graduate" to brokering "treaties" between tribes. Figures like Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Bono, Jimmy Carter, Nelson Mandela, and Desmond Tutu contribute to global causes beyond their original tribes. Some tribes view this departure as betrayal, but these leaders have simply shifted to resonant values. They reference their original tribes like hometowns-places they'll always love but have outgrown. The examples of early Stage Five represent the highest tribal cultures observed in the research. The authors believe it may be possible to stabilize a tribe at Stage Five, though currently these cultures only exist during history-making projects or when tribes are far ahead of competitors. When situations change, cultures typically regress to Stage Four before advancing again when new opportunities arise. The authors predict the future of business will be either frequent leaps into Stage Five from Stage Four or breakthrough stability at this level. They've dedicated their professional lives to helping everyone experience Stage Five groups and invite readers who achieve this to share their discoveries.
