In contrast, a receptive child can observe and assess input from her environment, then choose her response intentionally rather than automatically reacting.
The short-term goal is helping kids remain in their green zone when upset, where they can feel big emotions while maintaining clear thinking and cooperative communication. The long-term goal is expanding this green zone over time, widening their window of tolerance for dealing with difficulty. This means allowing children to face adversity, experience disappointment, and even fail-while walking through these hard times with them.
The balance between challenging children and supporting them comes down to "pushin' and cushion." Pushin' means challenging kids to go beyond their comfort zones, expanding their green zone by facing circumstances they're not used to. Cushion means providing support when children face obstacles genuinely beyond their capacity.
