Né en 1990 en Californie, Colfer a commencé à élaborer ce roman fantastique inspiré des contes de fées à l'âge de sept ans comme une échappatoire créative pendant la maladie de sa sœur, sa grand-mère lui servant de première éditrice et encourageant ses ambitions de conteur.

Le Sortilège Perdu, publié en juillet 2012, a lancé la série Le Pays des contes — une saga fantastique pour enfants en six volumes suivant les jumeaux Alex et Conner Bailey lors de leur voyage à travers un monde magique de contes de fées réinventés. Le livre a débuté à la première place de la liste des meilleures ventes du New York Times et y est resté pendant deux semaines. Colfer a depuis publié 20 livres, y compris des histoires compagnes et la série dérivée Une histoire de magie..., qui a également débuté au sommet de la liste des meilleures ventes.

En juillet 2025, Warner Bros Pictures a acquis les droits cinématographiques du Pays des contes, portant l'univers de contes de fées bien-aimé de Colfer sur grand écran, avec Colfer chargé de l'écriture et de la production.
