Percy Jackson wakes up with almost no memories except for a name: Annabeth. Pursued by two gorgon sisters who refuse to stay dead, he encounters an old hippie woman named June who offers him a choice: escape to the ocean's safety or carry her to a nearby camp and possibly recover his memories. Despite the danger, Percy chooses to help. After crossing the Little Tiber river-losing his Greek blessing of invulnerability from the River Styx-Percy uses his water powers to destroy the pursuing gorgons. June reveals herself as Juno (Hera's Roman form) and presents Percy as "the son of Neptune" to the stunned Romans at Camp Jupiter. This Roman camp feels fundamentally wrong to Percy-from their Imperial gold weapons instead of his Celestial bronze sword Riptide, to their organization by cohorts rather than godly parentage. Even Neptune's shrine is merely a small, cobweb-covered toolshed with moldy apple offerings, reflecting Romans' fear of the sea god. The ghostly Lares (house gods) react strangely to Percy's presence, calling him "Graecus" (Greek). Camp leader Reyna seems to recognize Percy but denies it, ordering him to be questioned before they decide whether to accept or execute him. Despite his confusion, Percy senses he's exactly where Juno needs him to be-a Greek hero in a Roman camp, bridging two worlds that have remained separate for centuries.
