Students who wrote with high rates of articles, concrete nouns, and big words while using fewer verbs and pronouns achieved higher grades throughout college. This pattern reflects "categorical thinking" versus "dynamic thinking" styles. Categorical thinkers focus on objects, categories, and definitions using structured, impersonal language. Dynamic thinkers emphasize action, change, and people through personal stories with more verbs and pronouns. In therapeutic communities for drug offenders, writing samples taken just before release predicted successful reintegration into society. Among 120 women studied, those who used more personal pronouns, emotion words, and positive language were less likely to be re-arrested or violate parole within four months. Different contexts demand different language skills-categorical thinking helps in academia, while social-emotional language aids in building relationships and community integration.
