Lori Arviso Alvord, M.D., est l'auteure pionnière de The Scalpel and the Silver Bear: The First Navajo Woman Surgeon Combines Western Medicine and Traditional Healing et une figure révolutionnaire en tant que première femme navajo certifiée en chirurgie. Née d'un père navajo et d'une mère blanche dans une réserve du Nouveau-Mexique, elle a étudié au Dartmouth College et à la faculté de médecine de Stanford, achevant sa formation chirurgicale en 1985.
