Christopher Mackenzie Priest (1943–2024) était l'auteur britannique acclamé de science-fiction et de fantasy du roman Le Prestige, un thriller psychologique magistral explorant l'obsession, l'illusion et l'identité à travers la rivalité acharnée de deux magiciens de l'époque victorienne. L'expertise de Priest dans l'élaboration de récits complexes avec des narrateurs peu fiables et des rebondissements dévastateurs lui a valu d'être reconnu comme l'un des meilleurs jeunes romanciers britanniques par Granta en 1983.

Son œuvre diversifiée comprend La Séparation, L'Affirmation, Le Monde inverti et Le Glamour, Le Prestige ayant remporté à la fois le James Tait Black Memorial Prize pour la fiction et le World Fantasy Award. Fortement influencé par H.G. Wells, Priest a été vice-président de la société internationale H.G. Wells et est devenu écrivain à plein temps en 1968 après avoir quitté sa carrière de comptable. Il a remporté le prix BSFA du meilleur roman à quatre reprises au cours de sa carrière.

Le Prestige a été traduit en 23 langues, est resté continuellement imprimé depuis sa publication et a été adapté dans le film de Christopher Nolan acclamé par la critique en 2006, avec Christian Bale et Hugh Jackman.
