Barbara Ellen Kingsolver est l'autrice lauréate du prix Pulitzer de L'Orée de la nuit (The Poisonwood Bible), un chef-d'œuvre littéraire explorant le colonialisme, la foi et le choc des cultures dans l'Afrique postcoloniale.

Née en 1955 et ayant grandi dans le Kentucky rural, Kingsolver a obtenu des diplômes en biologie de l'université DePauw et de l'université de l'Arizona, apportant une profondeur scientifique à sa narration. L'année de son enfance passée au Congo (1963) a profondément façonné ce roman de 1998 relatant le périple éprouvant d'une famille de missionnaires en Afrique.

Le livre a été sélectionné pour le Oprah's Book Club, a remporté le National Book Prize d'Afrique du Sud et a été finaliste du prix Pulitzer.
