Despite Roman rule, Egypt remained culturally distinct-a time capsule where pharaonic traditions thrived alongside Roman administration. Temples continued to be built in traditional style, hieroglyphics remained in use, and Egyptian was spoken by common people (though Greek served as the lingua franca). The ancient Egyptians conceptualized time as infinite and cyclical, represented as either an endless snake or a doubly twisted rope emerging from a deity's mouth, with stars marking the passage of time units. This image portrays time as a phenomenon flowing from and eventually returning to the original depths of creation-a universal, cyclical conception that permeated Egyptians' understanding of their own history. Modern historians have managed to untangle some of these twists, glimpsing events as they vanish back "into the mouth of the snake," but a true understanding of Egyptian history requires combining archaeological and textual evidence into a complete patchwork of material culture and politics.
