Nikolaï Vassilievitch Gogol (1809–1852) était un écrivain russe d'origine ukrainienne et un maître de la fiction grotesque, dont la nouvelle « Le Manteau » constitue une pierre angulaire du réalisme russe et de la littérature de l'absurde.

Né à Sorotchintsy, en Ukraine, Gogol s'installe à Saint-Pétersbourg en 1828 et s'impose comme un innovateur littéraire reconnu pour sa sensibilité comique sombre et son style proto-surréaliste. « Le Manteau » explore les thèmes de la déshumanisation bureaucratique, de l'aliénation sociale et du désespoir existentiel à travers l'histoire tragique d'un modeste fonctionnaire, utilisant la technique de défamiliarisation propre à Gogol pour exposer l'absurdité de la société impériale russe.
